Qun Mk2 is a remarkably affordable updated synthesizer, sequencer and 3-track looper with analogue modelling, granular synthesis and an integrated compressor.

The Qun Mk2 is an interesting looking device, packed with buttons, a small display and a single big knob for easy data entry. You can sketch out quick ideas, loop back, and overdub and it offers some deep levels of synthesis. And it’ll fit in your pocket.

Inside is a MIDI-controlled analogue modelling engine that pulls together 2 oscillators that can be regular waveforms, transformed into 4-operator FM or given over to granular synthesis. The sound engine was designed from scratch for the original Qun and has been under continuous development and improvement ever since.  There’s a multi-mode voltage-controlled filter with a 2 or 4 pole slope and key sync. You have a built-in wave folder for aggravating those tones and you can drop in a delay, chorus or reverb effect. It has a very flexible modular style modulation system to patch the four envelope generators and LFO to wherever you want.

If you put it into “Piano Mode” you can get stuck into the 64-step sequencer. Apparently, it can generate beats for you. Additionally, it has control over randomness, a pattern shuffler, scale quantizing and can also arpeggiate.

You can record up to 25 seconds of audio into the Looper. Usefully, it synchronises with the sequencer. You can mix up to 3 layers or tracks of looping and then overdub as much as you like. You can the tracks, mute them, and an integrated compressor will keep everything glued. It also accepts an external input.

The SD card slot is new with the Mk2 which of course allows you to save all your presets, sequences, loops and recorded data. You can also use it to import wave files into the Looper and Granular oscillators.

Qun Mk2 is a very considered device. The sound engine is excellent once you’ve mastered the interface. And in any case, adding a MIDI controller would help unlock the potential. It can sequence external gear as well as itself although it’s the looper function that really makes it shine. Rather than sequencing track after track you can just play something in, capture it, loop it and add something else. Consequently, it has a level of intuitive creativity that I find totally brilliant.

Qun Mk2 is available as a preorder for a remarkable $155.
