Pittsburgh, November 4, 2021/PRNewswire/ - MSA Security Corporation (NYSE: MSA) today announced the signing of a $4 million contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for The Strategic National Security Agency produces flexible air purifying respirators. Inventory (SNS). The respirator that can be sterilized and reused will be produced by the company's subsidiary MSA LLC at its manufacturing facility in Jacksonville, North Carolina

SNS is managed by the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparation and Response. It is part of the federal medical response infrastructure and can supplement the medical countermeasures required by states, tribal countries, territories, and largest metropolitan areas during public health emergencies. When the immediate supply of necessary materials may be unavailable or insufficient, the supplies, medicines and equipment for life-saving care contained in the inventory can be used as a short-term temporary buffer.

The MSA respirator manufactured for SNS is Advantage® 290 Air Purifying Respirator (APR). This respirator uses a silicone rubber mask to cover the nose and mouth of the wearer, and uses dual filters to provide respiratory protection.

In the past year and a half, MSA LLC has made significant capital investments in Jacksonville to expand its APR manufacturing capacity and modernize equipment. These investments include the opening of a new 85,000-square-foot warehouse facility, which improves the overall efficiency of the factory and allows the company to easily combine the increased SNS manufacturing work with the APR products used by the company's industrial customers.

MSA Safety President, Chairman and CEO Nish Vartanian said that the company is proud to support the federal government’s efforts to protect frontline healthcare workers through a reliable and sustainable supply of PPE. He pointed out that the Advantage 290 respirator and its components mainly come from the domestic supply chain.

"In the past year and a half, we have learned a lot. The most important thing is to provide our medical staff with a reliable and adequate supply of personal protective equipment when the pandemic strikes," Mr. Vartanian said. “In our 107 years of business, MSA’s mission to protect people’s health and safety has never changed. Our work to support American healthcare workers fits this mission perfectly. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to be our partner nationwide Efforts within the scope to help protect medical staff across the country."

During the COVID-19 pandemic, MSA worked closely with healthcare professionals and collected feedback to form the unique features of the Advantage 290 model. In use, industrial respirators filter the air through various filter media to help protect the wearer from the inhalation of external pollutants. These devices traditionally include an exhalation valve through which the exhaled air is released. The Advantage 290 respirator filters the inhaled and exhaled air through the respirator filter media, eliminating the need for an exhalation valve. By providing personal protection to healthcare providers while protecting patients in the event that the provider is infected, this modification helps reduce the possibility of the spread of COVID-19.

In November 2020, the MSA respirator became the first half-mask elastic respirator with this advanced filtering function and was approved by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.

Greg Martin, MSA's vice president of product strategy and development, pointed out that given the reusability of elastic respirators, there are many benefits to using them in a healthcare environment.

"Deploying a respiratory protection program that includes elastic respirators provides many benefits, including cost-effectiveness, reduced space requirements for PPE storage, and environmental sustainability," said Mr. Martin. He added that due to their extended use and reusability capabilities, elastic respirators like the Advantage 290 model can be used with disposable respirators, greatly reducing concerns about supply chain disruptions and shortages of PPE during public health.
