In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and purify the air in the classrooms, students in the building and construction industry at Dundee High School have been making temporary air quality units.

Dennis Brighton, a construction industry teacher, has been mentoring his junior and senior students throughout the process.

Brighton said: "Community members basically came up with new coronavirus traps, filters and fans." "You just assemble them together, seal them with tape, then seal them, and then the fan will Bad air is sucked into the filter, and good air is discharged after the air passes."

Filters are classified according to their ability to capture particles using a minimum efficiency report value (MERV). Most home units have MERV-8 filters installed by default, but students use MERV-13 filters.

"They are more like medical grade, they are MERV-13 filters, so they are denser, so they can capture finer particles," Brighton said.

The students used three MERV-13 filters attached to a box fan to create a temporary unit. Then fix the cardboard in the fan box to the filter to create the bottom of the unit.

In total, the students spent about 120 hours to assemble 56 units. The filter on each device must be replaced every 3-4 months. These units will be taken to elementary and middle school classrooms to help filter the air until the school can obtain permanent air quality units.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, although MERV-13 filters cannot fully protect people from COVID-19, they do capture smaller particles, including viruses, compared to most filters.

"They are very happy to see the final product sent to the primary and secondary schools and provide assistance, because if we close classes, they can't attend classes, so it's important that we stay open," Brighton said.

In order to further minimize the spread of COVID-19, Dundee Community School will also open a youth vaccination clinic for students aged 5-11 who wish to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

The area has partnered with the Michigan Family Medical Center to provide clinics. The first dose will be distributed in the elementary school building from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on December 1, and the second dose is scheduled to be distributed at the district elementary school on December 22 at the same time.

The parent or guardian of each child must be present in person at the time of the appointment so that they can be vaccinated. Each parent must make an appointment in advance using the QR code displayed on the flyer, which can be found on the school district website or Facebook page.
