New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on December 7, 2018) follows:

Looks like Gmail users are experiencing issues with automatic email filtering. We’re seeing a significant number of reports that say emails that are supposed to arrive in the Promotions folder are making way to Gmail’s Primary folder.

Of course, this is a major problem for most Gmail users as we all know that a large number of promotional emails arrive each day. Many of the affected users are taking to social media platforms to share this problem.

I wondered if they did this as a "special opportunity" to advertisers, for a fee. "Yeah we'll just...forget about people's filters for a day."— Achariya (@tanyarezak) December 7, 2018

@gmail You guys working on a fix for e-mails going in the incorrect folders? I have promotions e-mails in my primary folder and important e-mails ending up in my promotions folder. This began yesterday.— Paul Driscoll (@PDriscollTBT) December 7, 2018

Has anyone else's @gmail account been freaking out today? All of my 'promotions' emails are coming to my 'primary' inbox and blowing up my phone every 5 minutes. pic.twitter.com/rGGlW8oQiE— Amanda Parks (@ayy_parks) December 7, 2018

Gmail is confusing my Promotions and Primary tabs and it's driving me crazy. Dozens of promotional emails are ending up in my Primary folder. @gmail— halah (@_halah) December 7, 2018

@Google @gmail What happened to your algorithm recently with Gmail?! I'm getting marketing emails in my "Updates" folder that are clearly "Promotions." Please look at what changed in the past few days, there's a Promotions inbox for a reason! #gmail #google #help— Pat (@PMC527123) December 7, 2018

So Gmail knows I can't keep up with my Promotions folder so they have started to send those emails to my Main Inbox. Hmm, nicely done Gmail. #ISeeYou pic.twitter.com/Pty9b1dcse— Mel Graf (@Mellemo) December 7, 2018

We haven’t come across a response from Google or Gmail on this issue. However, we are actively trying to find more information on the matter, and will update this story as and when any news worthy developments takes place.

A quick look at user reviews on the Gmail app’s Google Play Store listing indicates the problem might have started happening yesterday. Now, given that the last update to the app was on November 28, it’s quite possible that a server side change could have broken email filtering.

At this time, we have no information on whether or not the problem affects Gmail’s iOS app as well.

A product expert on official Google forums has said the issue has been escalated to the relevant team inside Google. You can follow that discussion by heading here.

Google says this issue should be fixed:

Hi there, thanks for reporting. This issue should now be fixed, but do let us know if you're still having trouble. More info here: https://t.co/cLdTD8eNWn.— Gmail (@gmail) December 9, 2018

The issue has reportedly again popped up today.

In addition, some people are also experiencing lag in sending and receiving emails.

Many users are again reporting issues with Gmail’s email filters (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8). Users say that they are getting a lot of spam or junk emails in the primary inbox and the conditions set by certain filters are not met (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

Moreover, some are reporting (1, 2, 3, 4) that filters are also preventing important emails from reaching up to the primary inbox.

Google has acknowledged the issue where the Gmail anti-spam filters are not working correctly. The company is working on resolving it, but there is no ETA for a fix yet.

Some reports revealed that the issue where the Gmail anti-spam filter is not working properly is still present (1, 2, 3). Gmail team also confirmed that they are still working on resolving it but there is no ETA yet.

01:40 pm (IST): Gmail users may receive excessive political emails in their inboxes as a result of pressure on Google from conservatives.

However, Google has introduced a pilot program that allows users to keep political spam out of their inboxes. More on that here.
